[Headlines] Traditional vs. Modern Fundraising

End of year will be here before you know it! It might be too late to plan out a full end-of-year campaign, but you do still have time to make some phone calls and send an email or two. Perhaps you’ll find another idea or two in this week’s blog roundup!

Awareness / Communications

  • How to Evoke Emotion on Your Landing Pages (Without Going Overboard) Emotion is a major force in online sales. As much as we tend to disparage “emotion” in purchasing decisions, the fact is everyone thinks and makes choices based on emotion. We can’t prevent this. Emotional decision-making is hardwired into our brain’s functionality. @HubSpot
  • Overcoming the Overhead Myth with Crowdfunding Modern nonprofits don’t operate like the charities of old. They blend attributes of social enterprises, educational institutions, microfinance banks, and volunteer organizations. While these non-traditional models are having bigger and more lasting impacts, it means that these nonprofits have unusual organizational structures and often a higher proportion of funds going to overhead, a four-letter word to donors. @CauseVox

Fundraising Planning

  • Boomers: the young donors you should be worried about Once again, a self-appointed millennial tells us how we’re doing everything wrong, this time using the valuable space of The Agitator: ‘Millennial’ Rants. Don’t pay too much attention to any self-appointed spokesperson (of any age) who wants to tell you everything you’re doing wrong and thus failing to reach his generation. @jeffbrooks
  • #GivingTuesday Online Donations Up 36% from 2013 The third annual #GivingTuesday was held on December 2, 2014 and the results continue to be extremely positive. Online giving for #GivingTuesday 2014 was up 36% compared to 2013. Blackbaud processed more than $26.1 million in online donations on #GivingTuesday 2014. This was up from the $19.2 million processed on #GivingTuesday in 2013. @Blackbaud

Fundraising Tactics

  • One Thing You Can and Must Do to Boost Your Year-End Fundraising Totals Just think, 30% of your entire annual giving will occur in December.  AND 10% of your entire annual giving is about to come in the door the last 3 days of this month. So do I have your attention? Who is going to get your donors’ dollars? Here is one thing that you simply must do. @GailPerrync
  • Prospective donor’s ‘no’ is an opportunity to engage “Communication starts with listening. And for people who work with donors to raise money for charities, listening carefully is critical. Gordon Soenksen, chief development officer at the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro in Greensboro, N.C., has a positive take on what many fundraising professionals might take to be a donor’s negativity. @philanthropync
